Whats the most succinct way you can describe what a business analyst does? A business analyst helps facilitate activities and projects that will help an organization determine objectives for pursuing opportunities or addressing challenges. A business analyst then helps the organization define solutions to meet those objectives. One of the outcomes of good business analysis is that an organization will achieve better decision-making, and hence be more successful in reaching its objectives. What kind of background or education do you need to become a business analyst? Rather than needing a specific background or education, I would say that a business analyst must be curious and want to help people, teams, and organizations achieve excellence. A business analyst must have a growth mindset and be willing to dig in and learn about the business quickly. What traits to the most successful and productive business analysts share? The most successful business analysts will be able to facilitate collaboration and drive groups or team toward making good decisions. They should help teams come to a shared understanding of the problem and potential solutions. They can communicate effectively at all levels and with all areas of an organization. Naturally they will be able to analyze business processes and systems, business data, and business decisions. Finally, they need the skill to share the results of the analysis so that all stakeholders involved understand what needs to get done to drive value for the organization. What unexpected skill would be good to develop to be a better business analyst? Improvisation! A business analyst will often need to respond quickly and with confidence to unexpected situations. Business analysts with good improvisation skills typically also have creative thinking skills and can pivot as needed in any given situation.
