Read more Research Photos One of the reasons I chose to set the novel on the North Cornwall coast was because it is an area known for shipwrecks, some say second only to the Lizard Peninsula in the south of Cornwall. In fact, this stretch of coastline is sometimes referred to as The Lizard of the North. To this day, you can see the remains of shipwrecks along the shore. My husband took this photo when we visited the historic Charlestown Harbour (a Poldark filming location) on the south coast of Cornwall, as well as the nearby Shipwreck Treasure Museum. In the novel, the heroine, Laura Callaway, collects things washed ashore after shipwrecks and endeavors to return them to loved ones. Viewing the museums collection of artifacts helped inspire Lauras collection of treasures. For centuries, the ancient church of St. Enodoc near Trebetherick, Cornwall, was half-buried by sand. The local vicar was still required to host services there once a year, so he would descend into the church through a hole in the roof.
