Dorothy Zbornak is a divorced substitute teacher with a sharp tongue and witty retort to any question thrown at her. Last is Dorothys Ma, Sophia Petrillo. Shes a Sicilian grandma who narrowly escaped an extended stay at retirement home, Shady Pines, and she makes a killer spaghetti sauce. When The Golden Girls debuted in 1985, it was almost unheard of to have a television show starring four women over 50 who had active love lives, careers, and deep friendships with each other. The shows clever writing and chemistry of the cast remains as fresh today as when it debuted. Besides being a funny show that has stood the test of time, The Golden Girls is a cult phenomenon.
