Dorothy Zbornak is a divorced substitute teacher with a sharp tongue and witty retort to any question thrown at her. Last is Dorothys Ma, Sophia Petrillo. Shes a Sicilian grandma who narrowly escaped an extended stay at retirement home, Shady Pines, and she makes a killer spaghetti sauce. When The Golden Girls debuted in 1985, it was almost unheard of to have a television show starring four women over 50 who had active love lives, careers, and deep friendships with each other.
