Read more A note from the author For me, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone who has never embroidered before, or perhaps may have only attempted cross-stitch or tapestry, suddenly discovering the enjoymentof creating textured and three-dimensional stitches, and using them to create flowers, landscapes and stumpwork designs or even incorporating them in crazy patchworkI adore flowers, and draw great inspiration from nature. I hope this book will encourage you to share my passion and, most importantly, to develop your own skills, design ideas and style. Enjoy stitching! Read more An A-Z directory of Flowers is included: Agapanthus In general, this is a medium to tall flower that tends to be situated along the middle/back of your herbaceous border, although there is a miniature variety. Lavender Lavender is one of the most popular flowers found the world over in cottage gardens. It is loved for its distinctive smell, shape and texture and attracts bees and other pollinating insects. Colours vary from many shades of purple, lilac and mauve to soft pink and white. It tends to have an unruly bush shape with branches tumbling down onto the ground. It does, however, also come as a standard bush, in which case you would draw a stem as for the standard rose and place a small lavender bush on top of this. Daffodil The daffodil belongs to the Narcissus family of flowers and is known for its proliferation of colour in spring, common in many gardens but also in the wild. It comes in a number of shades of yellow, white and orange and combinations thereof. It is perhaps one of the best-loved and known of all the spring flowers. Buttonhole stitc Poppy The poppy is perhaps one of the most easily recognizable flowers globally. So distinctive with its red colour, it is popular in gardens and can often be seen in the fields, nodding in the breeze in spring and summer. There are also many other varieties in white, yellows, oranges and pinks, including both single and double flowers. The single-sided cast-on stitch makes a very effective petal for this flower. Read more Wall Art - Under the Arches I was inspired by the lovely arch of clematis in my own garden to create the piece of embroidery shown opposite. Most of the flowers stitched can be found in my garden, although their arrangement here has been designed with artistic licence! The archway was the focal point of the design, and from there I added and arranged other favourite elements from the garden. Treat the design as a starting point and add any additional elements you like I added the flying birds (tiny fly stitch) and the alliums on the left, for example. Glasses case - Under the Blossom Tree I love to sit and read in the garden. In this design I have tried to create a spot where I could do just that. Your tree can be embroidered simply by covering it with leaves, or you can cover it in blossom and even stitch the leaves in various shades of autumn hues. Pencil case - A Sampler of Flowers This adorable little envelope bag can be used as a pencil case, a bag to hold your embroidery scissors and tools, or even as a small clutch bag or purse. If you are a reasonably skilled embroiderer, you might like to create it as a clutch bag on silk dupion for evening wear. This particular design is a good way of learning the various flowers, as each flower is a small sample, making it easier to stitch than a more complicated piece, or than designing your own garden. You can use very simple stitches for all the flowers or more advanced if you so choose. It can also be embroidered as a sampler of flowers for framing. Beginners pincushion - Herbaceous Borders This dainty little pincushion is the perfect project for a beginner. It can be embroidered with perle no.12 threads and/or stranded cottons. If you are a complete beginner, use two threads of stranded cotton. However, a single strand for the pinwheel flowers of the hollyhocks is still recommended for a finer effect. Read more Read more
