Read more Welcome to The English Magic Tarot The English Magic Tarot builds on the tradition established by the Golden Dawn, and on the inspiration of Pamela Colman Smith and A. E. Waite in their use of illustrated pip cards, but it does something more than that. It invites into its book and deck of cards a whole host of images and ideas, energies if you will, that come from the colourful history of English magic. Here, with this deck and book, you have the chance to explore the world of English magic directly, engaging with its peculiar charms and eccentricities. And with what excellent guides! Andy Letcher offers mean- ings for the cards, and ways of working magically with them, which are exciting and original. Even if you know the tarot backwards, his insights and suggestions will surprise you. The images of Rex Van Ryn and Steve Dooley play on the imagination, evoking memories of dreams, of the past, of some of the danger and fascination of a fairground in earlier times. Above all, The English Magic Tarot invites you to engage with it, to enter into its world, and to trust it to work its magic on you. Read more Meet the creators of The English Magic Tarot Andy Letcher Pagan writer and musician Andy Letcher does the writing. For almost a year, he secluded himself in a friend's garden shed while wrote the book that accompanied the cards. Andy says, When it came to giving interpretations, I never really knew what I was going to write. Sure, I brought my tarot knowledge to the table, but I simply allowed the cards to speak. Often I surprised myself by what I wrote. Rex Van Ryn Magician and comic book artist Rex Van Ryn Van Ryn explained, the imagery of the deck was conceived in a very magical way. I meditated on the cards meaning using a drum beat to induce a trance state, sometimes dancing, sometimes prone. When I had imagined the image, I broke my trance and drew what was in my mind. He then added period detail, setting the images in the turbulent period that stretches from the Reformation to the Restoration a time that was perhaps the heyday of English magic. Steve Dooley Painter Steve Dooley stepped in for the coloring process. He says: At no point did Van Ryn say how I should color the cards. He had faith. I devised an entire palette purely on instinct. It had to work for me on many levels. Each card had to work as an individual image, yet they also had to work together. I wanted them to be earthy yet bright, old but relative to today. Read more The English Magic Tarot companion book It's a kind of Treasure hunt There is an overarching theme to the cards, something that runs through them all and binds them together, something unique to English magic. So the riddles do all point to something. Its a kind of treasure hunt, if you will, and there is an actual answer at the end. If you look at the cards you might spot strange scripts, odd images and references, letters that are the wrong colour and so on. All are clues that point not to treasure alas, but to something from English magic, something that does indeed bind all the cards together. They're there to encourage you to look at the cards in different ways. A wealth of information About the period & its magical practices, the cards & their meaning and how to use the cards The deck stays true to the classical format of the period from which tarot emerged and consists of a 22 major arcana deck and a minor arcana of four suits of cups, wands, coins and swords. The images of the tarot together represent a kind of distillation of the Western esoteric tradition, an endless story. Whether you use them as an oracle, or meditate with them to penetrate their deeper mysteries, we believe the cards should simply speak for themselves without the need for complex commentaries or arcane knowledge. The book gives some very interesting techniques of how to use the cards, not only giving spreads but also going into great detail about the art of memory technique employed by alchemists during this period. A fascinating technique from Renaissance magic At the end of the book there is a largely forgotten technique from Renaissance magic, that involves the creation of a memory theatre or memory palace. Most people know this from the recent BBC Sherlock series, but the technique is ancient and would have been used by English magicians at the time in which the deck is set. From what people are saying, this technique is news to most, so I'm glad to be bringing it back. Read more Read more
