How To Use This Book Its fine if you jump back and forth among the various chapters and lessons, but if you do, you may miss some key components of the style development process. So to get the most out of this book, its best to follow the chapters and lessons in the order in which theyre presented. Each chapter focuses on one or more style development themes: The Story of You, Inspiration, Comfort Zones & Productivity, and Dealing with Challenges & Deepening Your Voice. These themes are then explored through four creative lessons. After you create those lessons as presented, youre invited to complete an additional exploration of that chapters style development theme to help you infuse your own voice and style into a painting. When people said they could recognize a Tam painting, Id think to myself: Really? Who? How? Why? That is, until I had an epiphany, now several years ago. While my friend Gracie and I were listening to a song rich with harmonies and echoes, she remarked, You really do like layering, dont you?, in my art as well as in music. Inspiration: How to Find It, How to Use It Now that weve delved deeply into the story of you and how to use that information to support your style development, I want to look at how we can find and use other inspiration to help further develop our own voice. People have always wanted to understand the concept of inspiration, what it means and how to get it. The word itself comes from the Latin inspirare, which means to breathe into. Comfort Zones & Productivity Once youve established familiarity and confidence in your style, methods, and storytelling, its time to look at ways and methods that help you deepen your own style and voice. One really great way to take things to the next level is by starting to move away from our creative comfort zones, to go beyond those boundaries and start doing some different, possibly uncomfortable and unpredictable things. Dealing with Challenges & Deepening Your Voice On your style development journey, youre bound to bump into challenges that can get you stuck. In this chapter, I want to go over some common hurdles and blocks that can plague the artist. To stay strong on your style development path, you can look a little more deeply at the things that stifle, stop, or paralyze you. Here I also share some ideas on how to become more self-aware and deal with the common blocks and issues artists face. Read more Step-by-Step Instructions to Projects: Paint Rapunzels Face; Begin Her Hair The success of your face painting will depend on how closely you observe and translate light and shadows in your reference image. When I refer to value, I mean a particular colors darkness or lightness. Use a slightly damp sponge to apply a wash of greenish-golden brown ink to the collage to give it a uniform look. Keep a damp clean cloth at hand to quickly wipe off excess in case the wash is too dark on some areas (E). Add Symbols to the Background Work within a corner of the collage to share your take on the story with symbols. Working in the upper-right corner, I started by blending an area of light and dark to add contrast and drama. See if any of the shapes in your collage remind you of something. Go with the flow of your collage, accentuate some shapes, overpaint some, and leave some as they are. Think about what Rapunzels life represents to you and then add some symbols related to that. These are the words that came to me: window, darkness and light, halo, ladder, chains, little girl, witch, and candle (K). Develop and Finish Rapunzels Hair Take your time on Rapunzels hair, as its her most recognizable asset. I built her hair using about four layers. In the first layer, I used white and brown water-soluble pencils to sketch long, curly streaks and then painted dark brown lines between these streaks.
