Born in Oakland to a brainy, academic family, Harris became a lawyer, worked for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, was elected District Attorney of San Francisco, was elected Attorney General of California, won election to the United States Senate, ran for President of the United States, and, in 2020, was chosen by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden to be his vice-presidential running mate.
