Author Q&A What was your favorite experience from being on the set of the Moxie movie? It is really impossible to pick one experience. I can tell you that walking onto the set for the first time and seeing everything that had been inside my head coming to life was absolutely surreal and wonderful. The set was in an old high school, and there were posters and lockers and everything and it just hit me that they really had taken the Moxie universe and created it on this set. It was so wild! Meeting Amy Poehler, the screenwriter Tamara Chestna, some of the cast, and getting to watch the process of filming was incredible, too. I was stunned by how much work, time, effort, and people power it takes to make one scene work. My respect for filmmakers grew even more. Honestly, it was one of the best days of my life! Theyd created Moxie zines for the characters to read and distribute just like the characters in the book, of course, and it was so fun to read those. I have a blink-and-youll-miss-it cameo as a chemistry teacher, and it was so fun to get my makeup and hair done, too! What was the most exciting part about having your book adapted by Netflix as an original film? It is practically impossible to pick one part! Of course having an artist that I truly admire like Amy Poehler adapt my novel is crazy exciting. Seeing a world I created in my head come to life on screen is super exciting. And just knowing that the Moxie message of liberation and standing up for yourself in a world that tries to drown out girls voices is beyond thrilling! I feel very, very lucky. What does being a Moxie girl mean to you? To me, being a Moxie girl is about liberation and joy. Joy is the word that kept coming to my mind when I was writing Moxie. The joy of being your true self and the joy that comes with liberating ourselves from whatever dumb rules society has placed on us when it comes to how to behave, think, love and dream. And being a Moxie girl is about connecting with girls like you as you support each other. Read more
