The goals of my memoirs are to offer encouragement and hope to people who have bipolar and depression disorders, and to reduce the stigma in society. This also applies to people who live with loved ones who have illnesses. My personal belief is that there are pros and cons to many events in life. This applies to my illness; the subtitle reflects this philosophy: "I Hate Being Bipolar, But It Has Actually Helped Me Have a Great and Fulfilling Life." Research has shown that people with mood disorders have a high incidence of creativity. I firmly believe that people with mood disorders, along with other illnesses, develop a high degree of empathy, which greatly benefits society. Were it not for the positive feedback that I received from patients and staff from my hospital volunteering efforts with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, I would not have written this book. My presentations continue to involve telling my story and interacting with patients in behavioral health wards. Over the course of many years, I have given hundreds of presentations, and was honored to have received the Scott Adamson Memorial Peer Award from NAMI. I am fortunate and blessed with the experiences and successes I have had in my life. It is my hope that this book will encourage and motivate others who also experience behavioral health challenges.
