Payne I used to believe in biblical manhood and womanhoodthat God ordained male headship in the home and in the church, that wives must submit to their husbands, but that husbands do not have to submit to their wives. While I still believe that the Bible is inerrant, I no longer believe in biblical manhood and womanhood. My view did not change because I rejected the authority of Scripture, but because I examined the very Bible passages that I thought established gender hierarchy. It is precisely those passages, including 1 Cor. 11:216, 1 Cor. 14:3435, Ephesians 5, 1 Timothy 23, Titus 12, and 1 Peter 3 that caused me to reject the exclusion of women from leadership in the church and the home. Philip B. Payne (Ph. D., Cambridge) has served with the Evangelical Free Church Mission in Japan for seven years. He has taught New Testament studies at the University of Cambridge, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Gordon-Conwell, Bethel, and Fuller.
