Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was an American novelist and short story writer. An insider to New York’s upper class aristocracy, Wharton drew upon her first-hand experience to become to foremost chronicler and most insightful critics of the lives and morals of America’s Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, The Age of Innocence. A prolific author of full-length novels, as well as novellas and short-stories, among her other well-known works include Ethan Frome, The House of Mirth, The Custom of the Country, and the Old New York series of novellas.
