This edition is based on the 1877 translation by George Long (1800-1879).The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Although the content is mostly derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses but rather a compilation of practical precepts. Eschewing metaphysics, Arrian focuses his attention on Epictetus's work applying philosophy to daily life, making the work a manual for achieving mental freedom and happiness. Epictetus (c. 50 – c. 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. Born a slave in present day Turkey before being brought to Rome, Epictetus's was one of the most influential philosophers and teachers of his day, his teachings being written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion.
