In 1974, in the wake of a successful sex discrimination lawsuit, California hired its first female cadets to participate in a test program to add women to the California Highway Patrol. Linda Healy—at the time a parking enforcement officer, or meter maid, and single mom—applied for one of the forty available positions with the intent to better support her two sons. Upon her acceptance into this previously all-male program, Healy found the inner fortitude to graduate from the training academy with only twenty-seven other women in “the experiment.”Healy’s personal and career journey in this memoir take us from her first parking enforcement officer job with the San Luis Obispo Police Department to her tenure, thirty-two years later, as commander of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, one step down from chief. Ride along with Healy as she uses her training, quick wit, and innate wisdom to deal with horrific traffic accidents, life-threatening drug busts and gangs in East L. A., the management of a disintegrating women’s jail, and even a bothersome neighborhood pony. Chauvinism, hate, danger, broken relationships, parenting, Healy experienced and overcame it all.
