The Gynechiatrist: A Memoir, written by Jennifer Cerny, Nurse Practitioner, is part tongue-in-cheek memoir and part cathartic journal. It's the story of Jenny’s ordinary, yet extraordinary journey to become the very best version of herself. Throughout the book, she reveals how she eventually fused her deep love of women’s health and psychology, and in doing so, created something new and unique in the way she provided care to her patients… which led to her nickname, “The Gynechiatrist”- a term that was coined by a long-time patient of hers. The book is a first person account which begins with the tale of her own kidnapping as a small child (by her parents). It chronicles the author’s dysfunctional childhood and includes tales of her early NP career in the rural south and later provides a raw and genuine analysis of her personal struggles and triumphs over adversity. Jenny explores her journey of grief, love, loss, addiction, abuse, family dysfunction, and it also brings to light various psychological and mental health issues, all through the lens of the author’s personal and professional experiences. It's poignant, relevant, and intimately relatable, because these subjects have become a large part of the twenty-first century's consciousness and everyday conversation. More importantly, Jenny explores, with honesty, her determination and sacrifice, as they relate to hard work, perseverance, self-discovery, recovery, redemption, and above all, hope and love. By sharing her stories, and through her history, it's the author's hope that readers will not only gain a peek into her life and psyche, but will also provide insight into themselves and others.
