Zhang Ling's story begins in Shanghai, China, a place of prosperity and flamboyancy in the early 1900's. When she was a schoolgirl, she began keeping a secret journal. From early widowhood through a second marriage to a cruel husband who takes her to America and sells her into prostitution, she continues her entries in her diary. After escaping her captors, she finds sanctuary with a mission home and records her survival and how new friendships bolster her and help her start a better life. She marries again to a wonderful man and finds love, happiness, and motherhood. Her journal, in which she describes her darkest and most joyful hours, is her legacy which she passes on to her daughter. In a poignant moment, she requests of her that this journal be bequeathed to the future young women of the family. It reaches her great granddaughter who will eventually pass the book on if she has a daughter. This is the story of a woman of great fortitude and courage who ultimately finds fulfillment through her extraordinary perseverance.
