One of his favorite films was The Little Mermaid. In fourth grade, he memorized and sang a popular song from the film to his entire class. He fell in love with performing! He was inspired to write his own songs and plays Lin-Manuel took piano lessons and started composing his own music, filming movies for school projects, and directing school plays. After graduating from high school, he studied theater and film at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Lin-Manuel thinks outside the box When Lin-Manuel began writing Broadway musicals like In the Heights and Hamilton, he was inspired by his Puerto Rican heritage and his experiences growing up in uptown Manhattan. He loved telling unique stories in creative new ways. He has changed the world of entertainment Lin-Manuel opened Broadway plays up to a wider audience. Now, more people of color are acting in roles that were typically limited to white actors. Lin-Manuel also explores different musical genres in his plays, like hip-hop and salsa. Read more
