An Interview with Writer E. Lockhart What do you love about Willow as a main character? Like a lot of teenagers I know, Willow is passionate about social justice issues. She goes to protests and petitions at Gotham's City Hall. But she also feels frustrated and powerless when her efforts toward change dont succeed. Lots of young people I know are feeling that way and wanting to do more. In Willows case, thats where the superpowers come in. She becomes Whistle. DCs biggest heroes were invented by Jewish writers and artists, and there are themes connected with Jewish identity that can be traced back to the 1930s. Harley Quinn is Jewish of course and I adore her but shes mostly a villain. I was excited that DC gave me the opportunity to write a Jewish characters origin story and to have her identity be similar to my own connected to the Jewish history of New York City (or Gotham) and to secular Jewish culture.
