In doing so, he started a movement that led to Indian independence. 1963: The Organization of African Unity In 1963, 32 newly independent African nations met in Ethiopia and formed the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The OAU was formed to define the relationship these nations would have with one another and the world. They were determined to eliminate colonialism throughout the continent, and the groups financed independence movements in countries still controlled by Europe. 1990: The Human Genome Project From 1990-2000, an international team of scientists began the Human Genome Project. Researchers dove into the immense task of mapping and understanding all the genes humans have in their bodies, known as the human genome. The project took 13 years to complete and involved 1,700 researchers from the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and China. Read more
