They were determined to eliminate colonialism throughout the continent, and the groups financed independence movements in countries still controlled by Europe. 1990: The Human Genome Project From 1990-2000, an international team of scientists began the Human Genome Project. Researchers dove into the immense task of mapping and understanding all the genes humans have in their bodies, known as the human genome.
