Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was an English writer, philosopher, and early advocate for women’s rights. She is regarded as one of the founding “feminist” philosophers and more enduringly influential thinkers of her era. Her writings included the novels Mary: A Fictionand Maria, or the Wrongs of Women, political treatises Vindication of the Rights of Men and A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, sociological travel narratives like her Letters Written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, and several works on education, including Thoughts on the Education of Daughtersand Original Stories from Real Life. Mary Wollstonecraft died in 1797 at age 38, eleven days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who would become famous in her own right as the author of Frankenstein.
