Their objectives were to undertake reconnaissance patrols and to observe enemy movement, as well as to conduct offensive missions deep in enemy territory. They often operated in groups as small as four and moved slowly through thick jungle and bushland. The kill ratio of the SAS was surpassed by no other Australian unit in Vietnam. They were feared by the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong who referred to them as the ‘Ghosts of the Jungle’.In the game, it’s 1966 and Sergeant Allen, together with Troopers Baker, Clarke and Dixon of the Third SAS Division must undertake covert missions in the jungle of Vietnam, in an area swamped by Viet Cong. Danger awaits as they face numerous enemies and difficult conditions. They will need to use stealth, tactics and good planning to survive. This book is a solitaire wargame. You play the game, and the book will provide the “enemy”. The idea is that you draw/write on the pages lightly in pencil, allowing you to erase and change things as required. It also allows the game to be re-played multiple times as and when you choose. Other options for play are:Photocopy the maps and draw on those. Use minitaitures, cubes or similar tokens for the units. Use some kind of acetate and dry-wipe markers. Take a photo of the maps on a Tablet and use the “edit” function to draw and erase. It’s your book, it’s up to you!This book builds on my previous book-based games, The Fields of Normandy and Battles of Normandy. As with those books, it has clear rules that can be learned easily, so that you are ready to dive into the action quickly! These games are ideal for travel, or playing when time won't allow for complex board games. As ever, instructions and colour game maps are included; you just need to bring a pencil, four standard six-sided dice and an eraser. Nothing else is needed to play.
