She always wanted to go to space, and so applied to work at NASA, and became the first black woman to join the astronaut training programme. A few years later, she flew into space! The first African American woman to do so. Tessa Sanderson When Tessa was just nine years old, she moved from Jamaica to the UK, settling in Wolverhampton. She loved sport, and showed a lot of promise in the javelin and heptathlon events. Breaking lots of records, she earned a place on the Commonwealth Games, and then the Olympics. In 1984 she won gold for Great Britain in the Olympics in Los Angeles, the first British woman to win gold in the heptathlon and the first British woman to win any Olympic gold. Rosa Parks Rosa hated the rules of segregation in her home of Montgomery, Alabama. One of the rules affected where she could sit on the bus. The front of the bus was reserved for white people, and the back was for black people. The middle was an overflow, but if one white person wanted to sit in the middle, all black people had to leave and stand at the back. One day, Rosa refused to move and was arrested.
