“M. O.P. was literally life saving for my son, who was repeatedly hospitalized for suicidal ideation due to encopresis and enuresis.” — mom of a 16-year-old on M. O.P.“M. O.P. ended up being much easier than I thought it would be. It wasn’t even a big deal to go on a sleepover or an overnight school trip.” — 14-year-old on M. O.P.“My daughter leaves for college next month. We found M. O.P. just in time!” — mom of an 18-year-old on M. O.P. No condition is more poorly understood or inappropriately treated than teenage bedwetting (enuresis) and encopresis (poop accidents). Year after year, doctors assure bedwetting teenagers, “Don’t worry. You’ll outgrow it.” But half a million teenagers do NOT outgrow bedwetting (enuresis). This makes enuresis more common than autism, but enuresis carries so much stigma that no one talks about it. Teens with enuresis have endured years of useless remedies — alarms, bladder medications, liquid restrictions, hypnosis, restrictive diets, chiropractic, midnight wake-ups, bribery, psychological counseling. They are often blamed and shamed for a condition that is out of their control. Meanwhile, they avoid sleepovers and fear the accidents won’t stop before college. In M. O.P. for Teens and Tweens, Steve Hodges, M. D., professor of pediatric urology at Wake Forest University, writes directly to middle school and high school-age kids, explaining with compassion and humor that their condition is 1.) not their fault and 2.) totally fixable. The remedy is an enema-based regimen called M. O.P., short for the Modified O’Regan Protocol. M.O. P. for Teens and Tweens is a supplement to (not a replacement for) The M. O.P. Anthology 5th Edition, a much more comprehensive, detailed book written for parents, whereas M. O.P. for Teens and Tweens is aimed at kids ages 10 to 18. Dr. Hodges answers teens’ questions such as: Why didn’t I outgrow this when other kids did? Why didn’t anyone notice I was constipated? How long will it take for my accidents to stop?In M. O.P. for Teens and Tweens, Dr. Hodges explains that bedwetting is caused by chronic constipation — NOT deep sleep, anxiety, hormonal imbalance, or a small bladder. In short, a pile-up of stool in the rectum presses against and aggravates the bladder nerves, triggering spasms that kids cannot control. M. O.P. allows the rectum to shrink back to size and stop bothering the bladder, at which point accidents stop. Dr. Hodges has a large caseload of teens and tweens with enuresis and/or encopresis and has treated thousands of patients with M. O.P. He also runs a private Facebook support group for parents of bedwetting teens and tweens. Several teens contributed personal experiences to M. O.P. for Teens and Tweens, including how to manage sleepovers while on M. O.P. One mom wrote: “My son was on board to try enemas because nothing else had worked, and we had nothing to lose. It still shocks me how much resistance we got from everyone — the GI doctor, the pediatrician, the mental health care providers, his dad. But we did it anyway, and it worked. So much ignorance from the health care system. Lots of grieving on our part once we implemented the program. My son is 16, and I was finally able to buy him underwear.”
